Finding and hiring great people for over 2,000 restaurants doesn’t happen overnight. At Chipotle, we have a team of Recruiting Strategists stationed across the country to train our managers and help them find the right candidates to join our crew.
Looking to launch your career with Chipotle? We met up with Lucy, Recruiting Manager, to get the inside scoop on nailing the interview. Check out her advice below.
“Our managers are looking for great people who will help them ensure that every customer has an excellent experience at Chipotle. They don’t ask trick questions or try to scare candidates.”
– Lucy, Recruiting Manager at Chipotle
Q: What are you looking for when interviewing a new Crew member?
A: First and foremost, I look for someone who has a desire to help others – whether that is a customer or another Crew member. Working at Chipotle can get pretty busy during peak hours, and we need Crew members who enjoy the fast pace and are willing to jump in to help out wherever is needed most. A big smile, great attitude and passion for service are also important!
Q: What’s something you wish candidates knew when interviewing?
A: An interview can be a pretty intimidating situation for a lot of people. I wish candidates knew that they will do their best when they are able to relax a bit and be themselves. Our managers are looking for great people who will help them ensure that every customer has an excellent experience at Chipotle. They don’t ask trick questions or try to scare candidates. The interview is also an opportunity for the candidate to decide if the organization is the right fit for them too, so it’s always a good idea to come with a couple questions for the interviewer.
Q: What was your most memorable interview?
A: We were hiring the team for a new restaurant opening in Kansas City and a woman sat down to interview with us who blew me away. She was a single mom who recently had to drop out of community college because the cost was too high on top of child care. Despite her challenging circumstances, she had a big smile and optimistic outlook for her future. She told us she was looking for a full-time job just to help her get back on her feet and provide for her son. When we explained the educational assistance program that we offer our Crew members and she learned that she could earn her degree for around $250 a year, she started crying. She was so thrilled to find a company where she could not only advance her career, but also finally earn her degree. By the end of our interview, I was crying too!
Q: What advice do you have for someone looking to join the Chipotle team?
A: Come in and visit a restaurant. You can observe the environment during our peak times, observe the Crew working together and meet our managers to learn more about our company, the benefits we offer, and the career path. We are always looking to hire great people, so you will be welcomed!
Q: What is your favorite menu item?
A: I like just about everything on the menu, but if I want to indulge, my favorite order is a quesadilla with Carnitas – delicious!
