“My success is not based on how well I do or how great I am. It is based on how well I can lead my team to learn as much as they can from the things that were taught to me.”
– Pedro, Field Leader at Chipotle
Q: You have been one of our most successful mentors over the past year, earning more than a handful of People Development Bonuses. What’s your secret to success?
A: My success is not based on how well I do or how great I am. It is based on how well I can lead my team to learn as much as they can from the things that were taught to me. I believe in being humble and rewarding your team when the restaurant is breaking new records and helping the company to succeed. Celebrate and show them you care about them by truly making time so they can get the proper knowledge. Nothing is more rewarding than to see your team accomplishing their goals and living a better lifestyle.
Q: How has mentoring others impacted your career?
A: There is no ‘I’ in a team. I believe that helping others accomplish their values and dreams will allow them to return the favor to others in the future. You have to be committed to the people that you hire until the end. Never give up on them or judge them for making mistakes. Be loyal to them and believe in them. I want to help by ensuring I always do my part to show support to our team and our other restaurants.
Q: Who has inspired you to place an emphasis on the development of others?
A: I have been around great people in my life since I started working for Chipotle, like my Field Leader. She has been a great inspiration to me and instilled strong values in me. I still remember she always told me, “If you want to help others, you have to show them the path by providing them with all the tools and support so they can be successful. After that, it is all up to them how successful they want to be.” My actions and my dedication have impacted other people and those guys are probably as committed as I am to the company. It is never over. Each day is a new chapter in my journey and I just try to get the best out of it.
